Ambedkar Porata Samithi to hold protest in New Delhi on March 31 for implementation of Communal Award
Ambedkar Porata Samithi’s president Soru Sambayya and other members left for New Delhi on Sunday to organise an agitation in the capital for the implementation of Communal Award to ensure political empowerment for depressed sections. The Communal Award which was approved by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was aimed at creating separate electorate system for scheduled castes, tribes and minorities. The then British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald had okayed the proposal in August, 1932, on completion of historic roundtable conferences.
It was also incorporated in the Government of India Act-1935.
Speaking to the media here before leaving for New Delhi, Mr. Sambayya said that the existing reservation of seats for SCs and STs failed to benefit the community as those seats were also dominated by influential persons and legislators of depressed classes. “Separate electorate system under Communal Award would ensure real benefit for SC and STs. It was the wish of Dr. Ambedkar. We will organise the agitation on the issue in New Delhi to catch the attention of the nation,” said Mr. Sambayya.
