U. Nirmala Rani, AIDWA leader and advocate, passes away at 60, leaving a legacy in women's rights and justice.
U. Nirmala Rani, State committee member of All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and practising lawyer in the Madras High Court, Madurai Bench, passed away in Tiruchi after a brief illness on Tuesday (March 17, 2026). She was 60. She is survived by her husband, son and daughter.
Ms. Rani was the younger daughter of veteran communist politicians R. Umanath and Pappa Umanath, and sister of U. Vasuki, a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the national vice-president of AIDWA.
With a doctorate on the topic ‘Secondary victimisation of women’ from the Department of Women’s Studies, Bharathidasan University, Ms. Rani was a vocal champion of gender issues.
She wrote the book Nameless Faceless Victims in Criminal Justice System, published in 2016,
