BJP protests for MCC council elections, claiming mismanagement and corruption, threatens to escalate protests if demands are unmet.
Alleging that the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), managed by the Administrator who is also the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, is not responding to people’s woes, the BJP held a protest on Wednesday and urged the State government to conduct elections to the civic body’s council at the earliest.
Party leaders who spoke at the protest, in front of the civic body’s head office at Lalbagh, alleged that the administration of the civic body was riddled with mismanagement and corruption had crossed its limit.
The five-year term of the elected council, led by the BJP, of the civic body ended on February 27, 2025.
Speaking at the protest, former Mayor Premananda Shetty alleged that corruption at the corporation has crossed its boundaries as there was no elected council. Many people are complaining that officials are not responding to their woes.
“The government should hold elections to the council at the earliest and ensure smooth governance in the corporation,” he said.
“The government is looting people’s tax money by giving power to corrupt officials. This must be curbed,” he said.
