Three Afghan women with careers that place them squarely in the public sphere spoke of their hopes and fears post the Taliban takeover.

In their first official press conference since they took control of Kabul on August 15, the Taliban had vowed to protect women's rights "within the limits" of Islamic law in Afghanistan. For young female professionals in the country, that statement is loaded with uncertainty. What do these ‘limits’ entail? The New York Times interviewed a young boxer, singer and journalist from Afghanistan — all three women who actively operate in the public sphere — about what they hope for and what they fear now that the Taliban has taken control of their homeland.
