An Air Canada Express CRJ-900 collided with a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport while taxiing in bad weather, killing both pilots and injuring two officers; 72 passengers were onboard.
CCTV footage has captured the exact moment an Air Canada Express aircraft collided with a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, offering a clear visual account of the incident that occurred on Monday night.
The aircraft, Air Canada Express Flight AC8646, a Bombardier CRJ-900, struck a Port Authority fire truck while taxiing toward a gate amid bad weather. The flight had arrived from Montreal and was operated by Jazz Aviation, Air Canada’s regional partner.
According to NBC News, citing sources, both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the collision. Two police officers manning the fire truck were also injured and hospitalised. They are reportedly in stable condition.
Data from Flightradar24 indicated that the aircraft hit the vehicle at a speed of around 24 miles per hour (39 kmph). There were 72 passengers and four crew members on board, Reuters reported.
Audio from air traffic control captured the tense moments leading up to the crash, with urgent warnings issued to the vehicle on the runway. One transmission stated, “Truck 1 and company crossing at Delta.” Controllers then instructed another aircraft, “Frontier 4195, just stop there please,” before repeatedly warning, “Truck 1 stop stop stop. Stop Truck 1, STOP.”
The incident occurred as LaGuardia Airport was already dealing with significant congestion linked to a funding standoff affecting the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Travellers reported waiting up to three hours for check-in as staffing shortages disrupted operations nationwide.

Leon Panetta said Iran war was not an unexpected risk. He pointed out that for years, US security officials have known Iran could disrupt global oil supplies by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, this was a well-known danger, but one that appears to have been overlooked in the current conflict.
