Two boats collided near Dhari Devi Temple on the Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand, captured in a now-viral video which sparked urgent calls for improved boating safety measures.
A video showing two boats colliding in the Alaknanda River near the revered Dhari Devi Temple has gone viral on social media, as it led to concern and debate over river safety protocols.
The incident was reportedly from February 15 and occurred in Uttarakhand’s Pauri district. The video showed the tense moments leading up to the collision.
In the now-viral clip, two motorboats can be seen travelling in the same direction at a short distance from each other on the river. The boat in front appears to suddenly veer slightly to the left. At the same time, the second boat, attempting to overtake from behind, continues straight at speed. Within seconds, the two vessels collide.
The impact forces one of the boats to partially mount the other, creating a dangerous scene. Passengers onboard can be seen reacting instinctively, ducking to avoid injury and leaping into the river to protect themselves as the boats tangle.
The video captured panicked and frantic movement as people scramble for safety in the water.
