India linked to BNP victory, alleges NCP leader Nahid Islam after Bangladesh poll loss
India Today
After a dismal performance in the recent Bangladesh election, Nahid Islam, NCP convenor and anti-Sheikh Hasina protest leader, has resorted to allegations as if to justify the party's poor show. Nahid claimed that the election results had been manipulated, and the victorious BNP colluded with India and Hasina's Awami League.
Nahid Islam rose to prominence in Bangladesh during anti-Sheikh Hasina protests in 2024. He then went on to form the National Citizens Party (NCP), which took the poll plunge as part of the Jamaat-e-Islami-led Islamist alliance. After a dismal performance in the February 12 election, Nahid Islam, is alleging a tacit understanding between the victorious Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), India and Hasina's party, the Awami League.
The BNP won 212 of the 297 seats whose results were declared, thereby getting a two-thirds majority in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament). The Jamaat won 68 seats, and the NCP could manage only six. While the BNP was propelled to power in the February 12 election, the Awami League was barred from paritcipating in it by the Muhammad Yunus-led interim set-up.
As if smarting from the outcome, Nahid Islam, NCP convenor and chief whip of the opposition, alleged that India had a role to play in influencing the results. He claimed a tacit understanding between India, the Awami Leage and the ruling BNP, reported Bangladeshi news outlet, Prothom Alo.
Nahid made the allegations during a press conference on Thursday at the NCP's temporary central office in Dhaka's Banglamotors area, citing the recent reopening of Awami League offices by local BNP leaders. He urged the BNP-led government to convene Parliament and the Constitution Reform Council without delay.
His claims are part of a series of allegations by Jamaat and NCP leaders of electoral manipulation by the BNP, which is headed by Tarique Rahman. NCP leader, Nasiruddin Patwary giving BNP chief Tarique, the moniker of "engineer".
Nahid said though the February 12 general election was conducted in a fair manner, the results had been manipulated. "We accepted it [the results] for democracy and stability," he explained.
