A wedding in Uttar Pradesh was called off after a dispute over the groom's family beating up the bride's pet dog led to a violent clash between families.
A wedding celebration in Uttar Pradesh took a dramatic turn after a dispute over the bride’s pet dog spiralled into a violent clash between the two families - ultimately leading the bride to call off the marriage.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night at a guest house in the Khaga Kotwali area of Fatehpur district. According to reports, the bride’s family had arrived from Prayagraj by bus and private vehicles, while the groom’s side reached the venue with a traditional wedding procession. Initial ceremonies, including the garland exchange, were completed peacefully.
The groom, identified as Sumit Kesharwani, later stated that the couple had been in a relationship and had previously eloped to marry in an Arya Samaj ceremony in Kanpur. He claimed that after discussions, the bride’s family agreed to formally solemnise the marriage, prompting the grand wedding celebration in Fatehpur.
However, tensions flared in the early hours of the morning. Around 4 am, as jewellery presentation rituals were underway at the altar, the bride’s pet dog - which had been tied a short distance away by her family - began barking.
Irritated by the disturbance, a young man from the groom’s side beat the dog. Members of the bride’s family objected strongly, and a heated argument quickly escalated into a physical altercation.
