Students should not depend excessively on AI for research: KSOU V-C

Students should not depend excessively on AI for research: KSOU V-C

KSOU's Vice-Chancellor emphasizes the importance of original research over excessive reliance on AI tools amidst new plagiarism ethics guidelines.

Prof. Sharanappa Halse, Vice-Chancellor of Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), on Wednesday, said that students should prepare their research work through their own hard work and effort instead of excessively depending on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. They must use their own knowledge and critical thinking in research, he added.

He was speaking after inaugurating a three-day workshop on Research Methodology organised by the Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Study, Research and Extension Centre of KSOU in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare.

Prof. Halse said that 345 students have enrolled in research programmes at the university this year. Recently, there have been instances where certain research studies have been lacking in originality, highlighting the need for plagiarism checks. In this regard, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced Research Ethics as a subject in research programmes, he added.

The workshop has been organised with a government grant of ₹5 lakh and provides food and accommodation facilities for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. He urged students to utilise the workshop and added that students preparing for competitive examinations should read NCERT textbooks.

Prof. R. Mahesh of the B.N. Bahadur Institute of Management said that Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being used in research, but researchers must ensure that their original effort is not diminished.

Dean prof. M. Ramanatham Naidu, registrar C. S. Anand Kumar, finance officer prof. Niranjan Raj, dean N. R. Chandregowda, and director of the Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Study, Research and Extension Centre R. Sharanamma were present.
