Russia-Ukraine War News Updates: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced war on Ukraine and justified the invasion saying his military action order was in self-defence.
Russia's President Vladimir Putin announced war on Ukraine, ordering a military invasion of his neighbour. Ukraine and the West warned against the Russian invasion. The rest of the world anticipated it and the United Nations made an ineffective appeal to Putin to "stop".
Putin had his reply ready: "To anyone who would consider interfering from the outside: if you do, you will face consequences greater than any you have faced in history. All relevant decisions have been taken. I hope you hear me."

Putin also says "justice and truth" are on the Russian side, warning that Moscow's response will be "instant" if anyone tries to take on Russia.

Putin gave a televised address to the Russian people on Thursday morning claiming that Russia has "no plans" to occupy Ukraine.
He defined the objective of his "special military operation" to give the Ukrainian people the option "to choose freely" who runs their country.
