Addressing the people of Ukraine, Zelensky appealed to citizens to remain calm and said the country will not surrender its freedom.
President Zelensky said, "Be ready to defend your homes and towns. Ukraine will not surrender its freedom. Freedom is of supreme value. We have been attacked by the Russian Federation as Nazi Germany attacked in the second world war."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a war on Ukraine and large explosions were witnessed in the embattled country’s Kyiv and Kharkiv regions today. Ahead of the invasion, Putin in a televised speech appealed to Ukrainian soldiers to lay down their arms and go home. He said the clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces are 'inevitable' and the special military action was 'aimed at demilitarisation and denazification of Ukraine'. Russia has seized control of two villages to the east of Ukraine.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense and people in Kyiv are fleeing and taking refuge in the city’s underground metro stations amid a Russian invasion.
After Russia announced a war on Ukraine, its Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Ukraine will defend itself and will win.
