The well was built by the Kings of the Kurundwad princely state in the 1920s. The stone masonry structure once served as the primary source of water for the entire village of Vadgaon, which is now part of Belagavi city.
Residents recall that it had never run dry. However, the water body fell into disuse. Gradual neglect led to its collapse, and eventually, the well became filled in with garbage.
Members of the Foundation have come forward to restore the well under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) grant from AKP Ferrocast.
Mayor Pawar performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the works on Monday. He said that the water body would help the residents of Vadgaon and the surrounding areas. He also said such works would help preserve the cultural and architectural heritage of the city.
AKP Ferrocast managing director, Parag Bhandare, directors of Pyaas Foundation, including president Madhav Prabhu, secretary Preeti Doddwad, vice-president Abhimanyu Daga, and office bearers and members like Laxmikant Pasari, Deepak Oulkar, Suryakant Hindalgekar, Avadhoot Samant, Rohan Kulkarni, and local residents were present.
