Cab drivers protest against improperly installed road stripes in Tirunelveli, citing vehicle damage and safety concerns.
The cab owners and the drivers staged demonstration in Palayamkottai on Tuesday against yellow and white stripes laid across busy roads and highways in violation of norms and damaging the vehicles badly.
The protesting cab drivers said the white and yellow stripes laid across the busy roads and the four-lane national highways had been put in violation of the norms. Even though these lines had been laid to alert drivers and avert rash driving and consequent accidents, the unlawful dimensions of the stripes were causing severe damage to the wheels of the vehicles and even accidents.
The thickness of the yellow stripes which should not exceed the permissible size, had been laid dangerously on the four-lane national highways and even the South and the North Bypass Roads of Tirunelveli. Instead of controlling the speed, these stripes laid in violation of norms veer off the vehicles towards left or right to cause accidents.
“The recently laid white and the yellow stripes at several spots of the North and the South Bypass Road in Tirunelveli cause traffic snarl along this 7-km-long road as the drivers have to almost halt the vehicle while crossing these lines. Hence, the officials concerned should address this serious issue,” said R. Murugan, president of All India Executive Committee member of CITU.
