Concern over growing plastic waste in Ponmalaipatti

Residents of Ponmalaipatti raise alarms over plastic waste pollution and its potential health and flooding risks.
Residents and civic activists have expressed concern over the plastic waste being dumped in the waterway along the road from Jail Corner to Ponmalaipatti.
“Even though disposable plastic items have been banned in Tamil Nadu, they are still being used in many parts of Tiruchi. An increasing amount of litter has started filling up water bodies and the sides of roads,” civic activist K.C. Neelamegam said on Tuesday.
Stagnant plastic waste could cause flooding during rainy weather and also add to the infestation of mosquitoes, he added.
Many residents were of the opinion that the authorities should be more stringent in checking the use of disposable plastic vessels, especially in eateries, groceries and public bars.
“Many takeaway orders are packed in non-food grade plastic bags. There is a danger of chemicals leaching into hot food, if it is packaged in plastic sachets,” said Mr. Neelamegam.
