Nitish Kumar postpones Mahila Samvad Yatra after RJD promises cash transfer scheme for women in Bihar.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar postponed his Mahila Samvad Yatra, scheduled to start on Sunday (December 15, 2024), a day after the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) promised a cash transfer scheme for women in Bihar.
Mr. Kumar was set to start his statewide Yatra from Valmikinagar in West Champaran district and had planned to interact with women voters keeping the Assembly election due next year in mind.
It is believed that the cash transfer scheme announced by RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has put Mr. Kumar on the back foot, forcing him to postpone the Yatra at the eleventh hour. Mr. Yadav on Saturday (December 14, 2024) promised to give eligible women ₹2,500 each every month under ‘Mai-Behan Maan Yojana’.
Informed sources said that the ruling Janata Dal (United), along with alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and others, is now working on measures to counter the RJD’s promise with a better scheme for women, which is expected to play a significant role in the next year’s election.
In neighbouring Jharkhand, the Maiya Samman Yojana – a cash transfer scheme for women – is said to have helped the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led Hemant Soren government retain power.
In Maharashtra, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance is said to have been aided by its Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, under which women got a monthly assistance of ₹1,500, in its recent election victory. Similarly, Madhya Pradesh government’s Mukhyamantri Ladli Bahna Yojana purportedly helped the BJP retain power in the State in 2023.
Requesting anonymity, a senior JD(U) leader said, “No doubt that RJD has made a good political move by announcing the cash transfer scheme for women. However, let me guarantee you that our leader Nitish Ji will start giving better schemes to the women before the assembly election and then everyone will forget the RJD’s promise. It will happen soon.”
