Moderate to heavy rainfall across Delta districts, relief measures underway

Mayiladuthurai recorded heavy rain from 8.30 a.m. on Thursday to 830 a.m. on Friday followed by Sembanarkoil 18 cm, and Manalmedu 16 cm. District Collector A.P. Mahabharathi monitored the steps taken to deal with waterlogging on Eswaran Kovil Street, Aaru Paathi Panchayat, and other areas. The rain caused significant damage, including the loss of six cows, four calves, 15 goats, and damage to 57 huts and nine tiled-roof houses. Officials were actively monitoring efforts to drain the water.

Nagapattinam town recorded 8 cm of rainfall from 8.30 a.m. on Thursday to 6 a.m. on Friday. School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inspected the affected areas, including Nagore and Alavukkaranthottam, along with District Collector P. Akash. He directed officials to clear blockages, create temporary drainage, and divert rainwater to ponds.

Karaikal received over 6 cm rain on Thursday and 2 cm on Friday. District Collector D. Manikandan told The Hindu that lessons from the recent Cyclone Fengal were applied, with focus on vulnerable locations, clearing major drains, and ensuring food arrangements. “Crop losses had been reported in all cultivated areas during Fengal,” he added.

In Thanjavur district, heavy rain was recorded from Thursday morning to Friday morning. Thiruvidaimaruthur recorded 19 cm and Kumbakonam 17 cm. In Tiruvarur, Nannilam received 11 cm and Needamangalam recorded 9 cm.

Agriculture Department sources said they were assessing yield losses, especially in low-lying areas that experienced intense rainfall. Relief measures and flood mitigation work was going on across the districts, with district administrations on high alert to minimise damage and ensure public safety.
