Dinesh Gundu Rao urges government to develop Didupe-Elaneer road to ease travel burden in Dakshina Kannada district.
Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, on Wednesday, urged the government to develop the Didupe-Elaneer road to ease the burden on the residents of Elaneer and the surrounding villages of Belthangady taluk who have been taking a circuitous route of over 120 km to reach their gram panchayat headquarters in Malavanthige.
In a letter to the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary, Mr. Rao said Elaneer, Guthyadka, Bangarapalke, Ukkada and Kurcharu villages under Malavanthige gram panchayat in Belthangady taluk were located on the top of the Western Ghats, on the border of the Dakshina Kannada and Chikkamagaluru districts. Residents must travel on a circuitous route of 120 km via Kudremukh, Bajagoli and Belthangady to reach the gram panchayat headquarters for their work.
Similar is the case with reaching either the taluk headquarters at Belthangady or the district headquarters at Mangaluru, he said.
The locals, Mr. Rao said, could reach Malavanthige by traversing about a 20 km if the 9 km stretch of kutcha (bullock cart) road between Elaneer and Didupe was improved. He has read in news reports that the wildlife division of the forest department had permitted improving the road stretch as it falls within the Kudremukh National Park jurisdiction. Yet, no work has started, the Minister regretted.
Mr. Rao noted that many times, the two ghat roads connecting the coast with the rest of the State, Shiradi and Charmadi, get affected because of landslides during the rainy season.
In such a situation, the coast, particularly the Dakshina Kannada district, virtually remains cut off from the rest of the State. If the Didupe-Elaneer road was improved till Samse in Kalasa taluk of Chikkamagaluru district, people would get an alternative road for commuting.
Therefore, the government should direct the authorities concerned to get necessary approvals for conducting surveys and other works to improve the Belthangady-Didupe-Elaneer-Samse road in the larger interest of the public, Mr. Rao said.
