Condemning the DMK government for failing to establish a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) at SIPCOT Perundurai, BJP cadre attempted to observe a fast and were removed by the police in Perundurai on Friday.
The cadre gathered outside the SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre and alleged that industries in the area have been discharging effluents into open spaces, causing severe environmental damage and affecting farmers and residents.
They said there has been a long-pending demand for setting up a CETP in the industrial estate. According to the cadre, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, on November 21, 2023, announced the establishment of a CETP at a cost of ₹40 crore and issued a Government Order at Perundurai, but work was yet to commence. Subsequently, on June 11, 2025, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for a CETP project estimated at ₹136.76 crore.
The protesters alleged that despite the foundation stone being laid twice for the same project, no progress has been made, so far. They also pointed out that Minister for Housing, Prohibition and Excise S. Muthusamy had earlier assured the people that the project would be completed within nine months, but work is yet to begin.
Raising slogans, the cadre urged the government to expedite the project, stating that continued pollution has been affecting agriculture and public health in the region.
