The much-awaited Cabinet meeting held on Thursday to discuss the Socio-Economic and Educational Survey (caste census) conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes made no headway, and further discussion on it has been deferred to the meeting on May 2.
This was after several Ministers sought clarification over “technical” aspects and wanted additional details to enable a discussion.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has asked his Cabinet colleagues to submit in writing their opinion on the survey, even if it is a dissent note.
The survey report submitted by former chairperson K. Jayaprakash Hegde in 2024 has met with stiff resistance from the Vokkaliga and Veerashaiava-Lingayat communities, who have disputed their population figures and have termed the report “unscientific”.
“The discussion remained incomplete, but it was cordial. Ministers felt that more details needed to be discussed to arrive at a decision. They have sought details on population and backwardness,” Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil told presspersons at the post-Cabinet briefing.
He said, “The next Cabinet meeting will be held at M.M. Hills, and the discussion will revolve around the development of the region. So we are likely to discuss the issue at the Cabinet meeting on May 2.”
According to him, Ministers discussed social and economic parameters that had been set to collect data. He said it was likely that the next Cabinet meeting would arrive at a decision on the issue.
