Job aspirants in Dharwad protest for government job vacancies, clashing with police and opposing leaders amid heightened tensions.
A massive protest by job aspirants demanding that vacant posts in various government departments be filled brought life in the central business district of Dharwad to a halt on Tuesday as the agitators took to the streets blocking traffic, tearing up and burning posters and banners of both ruling and Opposition leaders, while gheraoing the police and also Opposition leaders.
The massive protest that finally concluded around 4.30 p.m. also caught the attention of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah who released an official statement assuring them of expediting the process within the legal framework and also elaborating on the reasons for the delay in recruitment and, according to him, the politics being played by BJP leaders on the issue.
Thousands of candidates, mainly those who enrolled themselves in competitive examination coaching centres in Dharwad, started off on a peaceful note but the situation escalated as the police efforts to restrain them from taking out a protest rally went in vain and the decision to detain their leader Kanthakumar R. backfired.
After having gathered at Srinagar Circle near Karnatak University, the job aspirants wanted to take out a protest march to Jubilee Circle, the permission for which was, however, denied by the police citing law and order problems.
Objecting to it, president of All Karnataka State Students Association (AKSSA) Kanthakumar had a verbal exchange with Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, leading to his detention.
The development further enraged the protestors who then tore up and burnt posters and banners of Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Ministers.
