The intense spell of heavy rain that pounded several parts of the district threw life out of gear and caused water inundation in several lying areas in the city on Friday.

With heavy rain continuing during the day on Friday, several low-lying areas in the city were inundated. A large number of houses in Crawford, Anbu Nagar, Krishnamurthy Nagar, Sakthi Vinayagar Koil Street, T.S. Nagar, Dheeran Nagar, Karumandapam, Linga Nagar, Woraiyur, Selva Nagar, New Selva Nagar, Thiru Nagar, R.M.S. Colony, and Navalpattu were in knee-deep water. Parts of Vazhavanthankottai was severely hit as the roads were flooded.
Several arterial ways, including Salai Road and Old Madurai Road, were flooded. With the open drains clogged in many parts of the city, the residents complained of sewage water mixing with rainwater on the streets.
“We encounter tough times because of knee-deep water on the streets. The cause of concern is the stagnation of water mixed with sewage,” says Mohamed Ali, a resident of Thiru Nagar in Karumandapam.
Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru visited various parts of the flooded areas in the city. He was accompanied by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan, Mayor M. Anbazhagan and senior officials.
