Russia-Ukraine War News: Russia claimed that humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha in Ukraine would be reopened on Sunday morning.
Humanitarian corridors for the evacuation of civilians from the Ukrainian cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha will be reopened on Sunday, Russia claimed, as per a local news agency.
On Saturday, Russia had declared a brief ceasefire in Mariupol and Volnovakha to allow civilians to exit. "Today, on March 5 at 10 am Moscow time, the Russian side declares a ceasefire and opens humanitarian corridors for the exit of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha," the Russian defence ministry said, as per Russian state-owned news agency Sputnik.
However, this quickly fell apart after Ukrainian officials said shelling had halted the work to remove civilians hours after Russia announced the deal.

“The Russian side is not holding to the cease-fire and has continued firing on Mariupol itself and on its surrounding area,” said Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office. “Talks with the Russian Federation are ongoing regarding setting up a cease-fire and ensuring a safe humanitarian corridor.”
Russia breached the deal in Volnovakha as well, Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk told reporters. “We appeal to the Russian side to stop firing,” she said. Meanwhile, Moscow outlet RIA Novosti carried a Russian defense ministry claim that the firing came from inside both cities against Russian positions.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24. While a vast Russian armoured column threatening Ukraine’s capital remains stalled outside Kyiv, Russia’s military has launched hundreds of missile and artillery attacks on cities and other sites across the country.
