Heavy downpour in Southern districts halts normal life, causing flooding in various areas, impacting farmers and fishermen.
Heavy downpour in most places in Southern districts on Friday brought normal life to a standstill.
Even though the Indian Meteorological Department had alerted about the rainfall, the day-long rain was overwhelming, especially for those whose jobs compelled them to venture out.
In Madurai, some of the areas like K.K. Nagar on Madurai – Melur main Road, North Bank Road, Goripalayam Road, among others, were inundated with rainwater.
Outskirts like Melur, Usilampatti, Vadipatti also witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall.
Similarly, Ramanathapuram district recorded 64.60mm rainfall on Friday. The heavy rainfall for the last few days, had disrupted the routine of the fishermen and traders associated with the fishing industry.
Some areas like Venkateshwara Colony, Bharathi Nagar, subway on the Paramakudi to Mudukulathur route, among other areas were heavily inundated.
In areas like Thirupuvanam and Ilayankudi in Sivaganga district, about 400 acres of chilly and paddy fields were under water.
