District Collector Raja Gopal Sunkara recently inspected the eco-tourism shop, vertical farming initiative and tribal huts, established at the MYRADA centre in Arepalayam, near Hasanur, on Kollegal Main Road in the hill area.
Aimed at promoting local tribal produce and raising awareness about sustainable agriculture, ICAR – Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), MYRADA, Gobichettipalayam, launched the “My Dhimbam Eco-Tourism,” project with funding from NABARD in September 2024. P. Alagesan, Senior Scientist and Head of the centre, highlighted the significance of the project, which focuses on responsible travel, conservation and opportunities for agricultural extension.
The shop features tribal crafts, value-added millet-based products and items created by entrepreneurs, including honey, and other farm produce. A vertical farming system, where plants are grown in stacked layers, has been established on the premises, and its role in sustainable food production was discussed in detail. Vermicomposting, poultry breeding, beekeeping and the agroforestry unit were also explained to the Collector.
Currently, the centre has three tribal huts that can accommodate a total of 15 tourists. Plans are underway to establish three additional huts. The scientist informed the Collector that the premises would soon have four rural sports activities that will enhance the tourist experience.
Traditional instruments used by tribal communities from the hamlets of Kottadai, Kuliyada and Bejalatti, were identified, and cultural teams comprising young and elderly members were formed to perform during various occasions. Self-help group members from these hamlets were trained in creating products such as soap, perfumes, inches and lantana crafts, which are also on display at the centre. Mr. Alagesan told The Hindu that 50% of the income generated from the centre would be allocated for infrastructure development in these hamlets.
