DMK and allies protest in southern Tamil Nadu against LPG shortages and alleged negligence by the BJP-led central government.
Members of the Secular Progressive Alliance led by DMK staged demonstrations in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi districts on Sunday.
The State-wide demonstrations were organised against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre for allegedly withholding funds to Tamil Nadu under various schemes and its failure to take measures anticipating shortage of LPG cylinders.
In Thoothukudi, Social Welfare Minister P. Geetha Jeevan presided over the demonstration near Chidambara Nagar bus stand.
She said the NDA Government had been continuously neglecting Tamil Nadu, which was facing a severe shortage of domestic LPG cylinders. “We believe that the Centre has deliberately reduced the supply of LPG cylinders to the State.”
The BJP, which continued to neglect Tamil Nadu, and the AIADMK, which supported it, should be taught a lesson in the upcoming Assembly elections. The party workers of the DMK alliance must intensify their grassroots mobilisation and ensure victory in all 234 constituencies in the State, she added.
Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, CPI (M) district secretary K. P. Arumugam and functionaries of other alliance parties were among those present.
