Devotees can now view the rare fig wood Perumal idols at Kumbakonam temple after 12 years of safekeeping.
The one-and-half feet high fig tree wood idols of Sri Perumal and Goddesses Sridhevi and Bhoodevi were taken out of the safety vault at Sri Varadharaja Perumal temple, Brahman Kovil Street, Kumbakonam, on February 28 and kept for devotees’ darshan.
The wooden idols were kept under lock and key at the temple, managed by the Saurashtra community people, for various reasons since early 1900. The one-and-half foot idols were taken out of the safety vault of the temple in the year 2013 and were kept for public darshan for 10 days. Later, they were placed at the safety vault located within the temple premises.
After a gap of 12 years, the temple authorities have displayed the idols for public worship for ten days, sources said.
