Chennai's two-tier Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor is set for completion by November 2027, enhancing local and heavy vehicle connectivity.
With work to pre-cast single-cell box girders progressing fast at their 64-acre casting yard near Chembarambakkam, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to complete construction of the two-tier Chennai Port-Maduravoyal elevated corridor by November 2027.
“The State government is cooperating with us and has promised to help us increase the number of working hours daily from 11 to 16, so we can complete the work as per schedule,” Virender Sambyal, Regional Officer, NHAI-Chennai told mediapersons on Tuesday.
The 21-km corridor will help improve connectivity for port-bound vehicles. Of this, 15 km will be on the Cooum riverbed. “We were not able to work for two consecutive monsoons due to restrictions and had to remove the bunds from the river, which were made to allow heavy machinery to lay foundations. With the increase in timings, we hope to complete construction up till the pile caps before the coming monsoon. Work to launch girders at the first level is expected to commence in 15 days,” he added.
Shivam Sharma, Project Director, NHAI-PIU, Chennai, said the lower tier, which would be dedicated exclusively to local city traffic, would have 13 ramps and end in Koyambedu. The upper deck, meant for heavy vehicles, will have entry/exit ramps in Maduravoyal. After completion, a total of 20,000 local vehicles and 5,500 heavy vehicles are expected to use the corridor daily. By 2047, the number of local vehicles using the corridor is expected to increase to 52,080 a day, he added.
