BJP leader questions police actions, accuses Congress government of bias, and hands over funds to slain activist's parents.
BJP Dakshina Kannada district president Satish Kumpala here on Wednesday questioned the State government reportedly sending police to the house of an 80-year-old Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader, U. Poovappa, at Kallare near Puttur, on Sunday night to take a photograph. The police reportedly took his photo while he was sleeping at a Raghavendra Mutt near his house.
While addressing party workers at the district office in Mangaluru, Mr. Kumpala asked what the need was for police to visit the senior citizen during the night. “It appears there is an undeclared Emergency in the district,” he said.
He also accused the police of acting biased in allowing protests in the city. “When Sangh Parivar wanted to hold a protest at Bajpe on May 25 seeking an NIA probe into the murder of the Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty, the police did not permit it. But they allowed SDPI to hold a protest at the Clock Tower in Mangaluru on June 2 evening,” Mr. Kumpala fumed.
He alleged that the Congress government is into appeasement politics to get votes. The police should first control the drug mafia and illegal slaughter of cows in the district.
The BJP handed over ₹25 lakh to Suhas Shetty’s parents at a programme organised at the party office on Wednesday. A fixed deposit was opened in a bank with that amount. The document of the deposit was handed over to the parents by Mr. Kumpala and MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta and others.
