110-year-old Kashmiri man makes chappals with straw to keep a tradition alive

Abdul Samad Ganie is trying to keep alive this Kashmiri tradition of making pulhoor which is centuries old. Such kind of straw footwear was worn by the people in ancient times.

A 110-year-old man from Kehnusa village of Bandipora district in North Kashmir is trying to keep alive an old Kashmiri tradition of making chappals or footwear from paddy straw. Abdul Samad Ganie makes footwear which is called Pulhoor in Kashmir.Abdul Samad Ganie is trying to keep alive this Kashmiri tradition of making pulhoor which is centuries old. Such kind of straw footwear was worn by the people in ancient times. Abdul Samad is making these traditional Kashmiri chappals for his own use and he also wants to keep this art alive. Speaking to India Today Television, Abdul Samad Ganie said, "My main motive is to keep this art alive so that our young generation could know about the ancient Kashmir when no one could afford to buy or use leather and other footwear. "
