Matthew Shallenberger took to the microblogging site to talk about a “confirmation bias” that has led people to believe that NYT is making the game tougher to solve.
Only if you are living under a rock, you might not know about the viral puzzle Worlde. The vocabulary game debuted in October last year and has since gained massive popularity. The game requires the player to guess a 5-letter word in six tries. Interestingly, the word can be anything from the English language.
The game was developed by Brooklyn-based software engineer, Josh Wardle. It got so much hype that it was bought by The New York Times (NYT). But, ever since the publication bought Wordle, players are of the opinion that the game is getting harder to solve. While NYT denied that, users were not convinced.
Jordan Cohen, NYT’s communications director said to People, “Since acquiring Wordle, The Times has not made the puzzle harder. We have not added any words to the solutions list which was already predetermined by the game’s original creator.”
However, a thread explaining the connection between Wordle and NYT has gone viral on Twitter. Matthew Shallenberger took to the microblogging site to talk about a “confirmation bias” that has led people to believe that NYT is making the game tougher to solve.
He also went on to talk about people’s preexisting dislike for NYT because of their fear that the publication would start charging a fee for the formerly free online game. The notion coupled with failure to solve some puzzles resulted in the confirmation in people’s minds.
