
Women more willing to donate organs posthumously in India

India is among a small group of countries where living organ donations far exceed deceased donations, despite relatively high public willingness to donate after death. An analysis of 2024 driving licence application data shows that women across most States were more willing than men to consent to posthumous organ donation. Yet, transplant data reveal a sharp gender imbalance among recipients, with men accounting for nearly two-thirds of organ recipients in 2023.
