Transgenders go on rally condemning Transgenders Amendment Bill 2026
Transgenders, transmen along with Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) here on Monday went on a rally to condemn the Union Government’s Bill to amend the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019.
Stating that the new bill introduced by the Union Government was designed to strip away the right of transgender individuals to affirm their self-identity, Priya Babu of Transgender Resource Centre, said, who gave the authority to the governrnment to determine someone’s gender identity.
“They have used the words ‘Aravani’ and ‘Eunuch.’ In reality, we stopped using the word ‘Aravani’ almost 15 years ago and have instead provided the respectful terms ‘Thirunangai’ (Transwoman) and ‘Thirunambi’ (Transman) under the honourable title ‘Nangai.’ However, those terms have not been used here at all,” she added.
Similarly, they have used the word ‘Eunuch.’ The meaning of the word ‘Eunuch’ is ‘castrated male.’ She requested that the word also to be removed from the amendment bill.
Also, Transmen (Thirunambigal) have not been included in this; we request that they be included as well
“If we want to obtain a gender identity card, we must go to doctors to receive one. It is stated that only after they provide approval can it be submitted to the District Collector, and only after obtaining the Collector’s signature will a Transgender Identity Card be issued to us,” Ms. Priya Babu noted.
