Tiruchi Corporation has identified a building to set up an additional kitchen for the expansion of Chief Minister’s breakfast scheme in the city.

At present, a centralised kitchen is operated at the Syed Murtuza School complex near Marakkadai to prepare breakfast for primary schoolchildren under the scheme. The kitchen supplies nutritious food to around 7,500 students in about 75 government and aided schools in the city.

With the expansion of the breakfast scheme to more schools, the Corporation has identified a vacant building near Circuit House in Mannarpuram, spread over 6,000 sq. ft., to set up an additional kitchen. The building had served as a micro composting centre.

“Renovation and modification work would be initiated soon and despatch points, storage spaces and other facilities would be developed. We expect to complete the work within a month,” said V. Saravanan, Corporation Commissioner. The civic body would make facilities for RO drinking water plants and utensils for the kitchen.

The project would be initiated utilising the Corporation’s General Funds and is estimated to cost about ₹60 lakh. The kitchen will supply breakfast to around 9,500 students of Classes 1 to 5 in 90 government-aided schools situated across the city, including two schools in town panchayats.

The facility will be operational between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. on working days of the school and the breakfast will reach all schools before 8 a.m. The route maps are being planned to deliver food on time, he added.
