After receiving record rainfall in May which was the highest since 1901, Karnataka has been witnessing a dry spell so far in June.
With the south-west monsoon having set over Kerala earlier than expected, many parts of Karnataka received heavy rainfall. However, the monsoon has stalled over Karnataka like the rest of the country now.
Officials of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru, said though there have been brief spells of rain, overall the monsoon has stalled. Officials said that the monsoon is expected to revive after June 12.
“Some parts of the State are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall from June 9 onwards, and overall the south-west monsoon is expected to revive after June 12. There are indications that between June 12 and 19, there would be heavy rainfall throughout the State,” IMD, Bengaluru, director C.S. Patil said.
The IMD forecast for June 9 states that moderate rains are likely to occur at many places in coastal Karnataka; heavy rains and thundershowers with gusty wind are likely over north-interior Karnataka, and light to moderate rains and thundershowers with gusty winds in south-interior Karnataka.
The forecast for Bengaluru city and the neighbourhood for the next 36 hours states that there would be partly cloudy skies.
“Light to moderate rains are likely. The maximum and the minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 32°C and 21°C, respectively,” the IMD forecast stated.
