Southwest monsoon intensifies along Western Ghats in southern districts

Southwest monsoon intensifies in Kanniyakumari, Tenkasi, and Tirunelveli districts with heavy rainfall and strong winds.
The southwest monsoon has intensified over the past few days in Kanniyakumari and Tenkasi districts, with parts of Tirunelveli district also receiving rain.
The sky remains overcast and widespread showers have been reported in the Western Ghats in the three districts. Most areas in Kanniyakumari experienced moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds.
According to a statement from the Indian Meteorological Department, squally weather with wind speed of 40 kmph to 50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph was likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu Coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin areas from May 26 to May 30.
Due to intermittent rain in the hilly regions, as a precautionary measure bathing in all waterfalls at Courtallam has been prohibited since Sunday night. Waterflow gradually increased overnight and turned into a roaring flood.
In Kanniyakumri, Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli districts, fishing boats remained docked as strong winds were expected over the sea.
Rainfall recorded in the region in the 24 hours ending 6 a.m. on Monday was (in mm): Oothu 46, Adavinainar Dam, 36, Shengottah 24, Tenkasi 20, Gundar Dam 36.40, Karuppanathi Dam 17.50, Balamore 55.4, Surulacode 41.4, Kuzhithurai 28.4, Mylaudy 27.2, Adayamadai 39.4, Pechiparai 21.8 and Perunchani recorded 26.4 mm rainfall.
