The silver jubilee celebrations of Thiruvalluvar statue in Kanniyakumari has been planned from December 30 to January 1. The preparations for the three-day event, which is expected to draw around 12,000 people, are in full swing.
The 134-foot-tall statue was declared open in 2000 by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
Minister of Public works, Highways and Minor Ports E.V. Velu, who has been camping in the district for the past two days, inspected the ongoing construction of a glass bridge connecting Thiruvalluvar statue and Vivekananda rock memorial. The bridge is being constructed by the Highways Department at a cost of ₹37 crore.
Th Minister also reviewed the arrangements being made for the silver jubilee celebrations.
Later, he said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin would attend event, and inaugurate the glass bridge on December 30. The three-day event would also feature different cultural programmes and welfare initiatives, he added.
Mr. Velu urged the officials to ensure timely completion of all preparations.
A police official said their primary focus would be on managing traffic to avoid inconvenience to the public and the tourists. He said, “Since it is the Sabarimala season, seven additional parking facilities that can accommodate 1,500 vehicles at a time have been planned.”

The municipal bus stand auditorium in Malappuram was packed. But nobody quite knew what to expect. After all, a new event was making its debut at the State School Arts Festival. The moment V.G. Harikrishnan started his rendition of Pyar bhare do sharmile nain..., everyone was convinced that Ghazal was here to stay. The student from GVHSS, Atholi (Kozhikode), was applauded loudly for his rendering of the timeless ghazal sung originally by Mehdi Hassan.

For the last few weeks, several wards in Madurai city have been getting piped drinking water through a new drinking water scheme. The sweetness of the generously supplied water has led to loss of business to several suppliers of canned drinking water in the city. But, not many know that the water supplied to the houses in Madurai is directly drawn from Lower Dam of Mullaperiyar Dam in Idukki district of Kerala.
