
Shopkeeper in Tamil Nadu arrested for refusing to sell things to residents of particular street

A shopkeeper in Tamil Nadu's Tenkasi refused to sell snacks to some students and said village authorities restricted sale to residents of a particular street.
A shopkeeper in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi refused to sell snacks to a group of students and said the village authorities imposed a restriction against selling anything to residents belonging to a particular street. Police have now arrested the shopkeeper, identified as Maheshwaran.
He also asked the students to go home and inform their families about the restriction.
In a video of the incident, the shopkeeper can be heard telling the students that the village has discussed the matter and decided not to sell anything to residents of that particular street.

After the video emerged on social media, the district administration swung into action and registered an FIR on the matter. The accused has also been remanded to police custody. The shop where the incident happened is now sealed by the authorities.
The main accused in the case is the village head and he has been arrested, said a source in the district administration.

The matter pertains to a petition filed by one Nikhil Kumar Punia, who was born into an upper-caste Hindu family but supposedly converted to Buddhism later. He, along with another General Category candidate, has sought minority reservation benefits for admission to a Buddhist medical college on grounds of their purported conversion.
