A new Sericulture Experience Park inaugurated in Udhagamandalam to educate visitors on silk production and mulberry cultivation.
The Nilgiris district collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru and Chief whip of the Tamil Nadu government, K. Ramachandran, inaugurated a Sericulture World Experience Park here on Tuesday.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Ramachandran said that the Department of Textiles under the Tamil Nadu government has established the Sericulture Experience Park at a cost of ₹75 lakh in the first phase on 5 acres of land at the Government Seed Farm, which had long been functioning as a silkworm rearing centre, in Coonoor.
“This park has been opened today for public viewing. It has been designed to create awareness among tourists visiting the Nilgiris district as well as the local public about silkworm rearing and silk production. The park reflects the “Soil to Silk” concept and showcases the entire process — from mulberry cultivation to silk saree production — in a demonstrative and educational manner,” said Mr. Ramachandran.
The park will seek to familiarise visitors on core aspects of the sericulture industry, including mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, cocoon harvesting, silk rearing and weaving, he added. In order to make the experience of visiting the park more engaging for children, a virtual reality imaging device has also been installed at the park, with further infrastructure, including the setting up of a rock garden and other facilities also being undertaken at a combined cost of ₹95 lakh, said a press release from the Nilgiris district administration.
Speaking later in the day, following the inauguration of a disaster management control room in Udhagamandalam, Ms. Tanneeru said that the Nilgiris district administration and the Horticulture Department have proposed that the summer festival season in the district be held between May 15 and 30 of this year. “This proposal has to be sent to the Election Commission for their approval and exemption. This year, the Flower Show and Fruit Show are tentatively to be held during this period,” she said.
