Rough sea alert off Rameswaram keeps country boats on shore

IMD issues high wave alert and heavy wind forecast for Tamil Nadu coast, fishermen advised to stay on shore.
As high wave alert along with heavy wind forecast has been issued by the Indian Meteorological Department from Tuesday, Fisheries Department has informed the country boat fishermen in Rameswaram and Pamban to remain on shore until next update from IMD.
The IMD has predicted squally weather with wind speed of 40 kmph to 50 kmph gushing to 60 kmph likely to prevail over Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin area.
As heavy wind speed warning has been issued for four days (May 27 to May 30), the sea will be rough and unfavourable for country boats.
According to sources, high wave alerts have been given to the Ramanathapuram coast from Rochma Nagar to Theerthaandathanam. High waves in the range of 3- 3.5 metres are expected. So vocational and recreational activities along the coast must be restricted,” the official added.
During the ban period for mechanised boats, officials said about 3,500 country boats were venturing into the sea. Until normalcy returns, Till a favourable situation is announced by the IMD, fishermen should not venture into the sea, the official added.
Further, people visiting Dhanushkodi should not get into the sea for performing any rituals.
