Rebel nominations strain alliances in Karaikal

Rebel nominations in Karaikal expose tensions within electoral alliances, risking voter fragmentation ahead of the Puducherry Assembly elections.
Rebel candidates in Karaikal have exposed the fissures within key electoral alliances ahead of the Puducherry Assembly elections.
While party leaders insist rebels will withdraw and face disciplinary action, developments on the ground point to underlying tensions over seat-sharing and the enduring role of individual influence in the region’s electoral politics.
In the Congress–DMK alliance, delays in finalising seat-sharing appear to have triggered multiple nominations. Congress functionaries filed nominations across all five constituencies before the alliance contours were settled. Among them, A.V.S. Prabhu, appointed election in-charge for Karaikal South, filed papers both as a Congress candidate and as an Independent from the constituency — a traditional DMK stronghold that has again been allotted to the party.
The DMK, which holds two seats in the district, has fielded candidates in Neravy–T.R. Pattinam and Karaikal South, in line with the agreement.
A similar pattern has emerged in the N.R. Congress–BJP alliance. The N.R. Congress has fielded candidates in Karaikal North and Nedungadu (SC), both of which it won in the previous election and has retained under the current arrangement. However, V. Vigneshwaran, Joint Secretary of the BJP’s State Medical Wing, has filed nomination papers from Nedungadu despite the seat not being allotted to the party.
Senior leaders sought to downplay the developments. R. Kamalakannan, former Minister and vice-president of the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee, said those who filed nominations in violation of alliance norms would “respect the coalition framework” and withdraw within the stipulated period, warning of disciplinary action otherwise.
