Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) has urged the State government to begin the process of filling up 56,432 posts only after rectifying the mistakes in fixing the roster and implementing the internal reservation among Scheduled Castes.
DSS state convener M. Gurumurthy, in a press conference in Shivamogga on Wednesday, said his organisation had been fighting for the internal reservation for over four decades. Following the protests, the Congress government led by S.M. Krishna constituted a commission under Justice A.J. Sadashiva. The commission submitted its report after studying the social and economic status of all 101 castes in the Sceduled Castes’ list. However, the successive government failed to implement it.
During the BJP rule, the government decided to increase the reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from 18% to 24%. no steps were taken to implement this change by adding it to the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution, which would have shielded it from judicial review. “As many people moved court questioning the increase in reservation, the court stayed it. The State government should fix the internal reservation within the 15% limit and resolve the confusion over the roster system for filling positions,” he stated.
Further, he urged the Chief Minister to take an all-party delegation to the Prime Minister to get the increase in the reservation for SC and ST included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution.
Protest
Representatives of Madiga Mahasabha and Madiga Dandora Samiti staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office, demanding the implementation of internal reservation among the Scheduled Castes. The protesters stated that they would oppose recruitment for government positions unless internal reservations among Scheduled Castes were implemented.
