
One dead, one injured in tree collapse incidents in Mumbai

A 26-year-old man died while another was injured in rain-related incidents in Mumbai, said the civic body officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Tuesday (May 27, 2025).
Tejas Naidu, 26, died on Monday at 8 p.m. after a tree collapsed on him near Ganesh Maidan in Kannamwar Nagar, Vikroli. He was rushed to Godrej Hospital but was declared dead, the BMC officials said. According to Dr. Amol Jadhav, Medical Officer, Naidu suffered severe injuries from the tree collapse incident.
Officials from the Horticulture Department said that the tree was being pruned and trimmed ahead of the monsoon, but due to rotting of its roots, it had decayed and fell.
In a similar case, Sairaj Pawar, 24, was injured after a tree branch fell on him near St. Xavier’s College in south Mumbai around 1.30 p.m. on Monday. “He was taken to the State-run St. George Hospital, and his condition is stable,” said an official from the BMC.
A total of 70 such incidents of trees and branches falling were reported on Monday with 46 such cases in the city, seven in eastern suburbs and 17 in western suburbs. As many as 53 incidents of short circuits were reported in the city, including 39 in the eastern suburbs, four in the western suburbs and 10 in the eastern suburbs. At least 12 houses and walls collapse incidents were reported in 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
IMD had issued red alert for Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, orange alert for Raigad, and yellow alert for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai and Dhule.
Due to unseasonal rain and storms, a total of 2,124 houses and four huts were completely destroyed and 2,120 were partially destroyed in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, the district collector’s office said. Over 9,000 farmers and fishermen in the district have suffered losses due to heavy rains.
