Mirzapur is fiction, we can't interfere: Supreme Court dismisses case against Amazon Prime show

The Supreme Court has dismissed the case against the Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur. Lawyer had sought a ban on Mirzapur for showing the city in a bad light.

More than a year ago, the makers of Mirzapur were accused of tarnishing the image of Uttar Pradesh and portraying UP and Mirzapur in a bad light. Mirzapur producers Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and Bhaumik Gondaliya were named in the complaint. On September 21, the Supreme Court dismissed the case against the makers of Mirzapur.

The complainant had asked for a ban on Mirzapur. According to him, in the series the city was shown in a bad light. They also disliked that the show features the Shakti Peeth.

In the proceeding, Justice D Y Chandrachud said, "This is all fiction. Sorry we can't interfere. Dismissed."

When the lawyer said, "Show(Mirzapur) shows the city in bad light, a family is shown to have illicit relations within. They're showing the Shakti Peeth," Justice Chandrachud added, "These are all ultimately fiction."

When the lawyer reminded the court that earlier a notice was issued to the makers, the bench said, "We are not inclined, there is nothing in this matter. They have shown the city not the peeth. Dismissed."

Mirzapur stars Pankaj Tripathi as Akhandanand Tripathi, the mafia don who runs a carpet business as a facade, and basically owns the city. Ali Fazal plays Guddu Pandit, who attempts to take over the throne of Mirzapur from the Tripathis in the second season. The show also stars Harshita Gaur, Shweta Tripathi, Vikrant Massey, and Divyendu Sharma among others.
