Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan launches breakfast scheme for sanitation workers in Madurai
Following Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s official expansion of breakfast scheme for sanitation workers to cover all urban local bodies across the State, Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services Palanivel Thiaga Rajan on Monday inaugurated the expansion of the scheme in Madurai.
He inaugurated the Madurai chapter of the expansion at the Arapalayam, Melapponnagaram central kitchen complex.
The initiative was originally piloted by Mr. Stalin on November 15, 2025, specifically for workers within Greater Chennai Corporation. Following that, he launched the State wide expansion today from Polivakkam Panchayat in Thiruvallur.
As part of the expansion, the scheme would cover 25 Corporations, 145 Municipalities and 479 Town Panchayats.
In total, 1,29,689 sanitation workers across Tamil Nadu would now receive hygienic, nutritious meals daily, provided by the state, said a press statement.
In Madurai, the scheme has been tailored to meet the needs of both day and night shifts. A total of 5,265 workers across 100 wards (spanning five zones) would be provided with lunch. Additionally, 200 night-shift workers would receive dinner.
