Minister for Municipal Administration K.N. Nehru visited various parts of the rain-hit areas in Tiruchi on Sunday and inspected the flood relief work carried out by the Corporation.
Accompanied by Collector M. Pradeep Kumar, Corporation Commissioner V. Saravanan, Mayor M. Anbazhagan and senior officials, Mr. Nehru went on a tour for the second day to inspect the waterlogged areas in the city. He visited Ponnagar, Karumandapam Kulathukarai, Piratiyur, Kaveri Nagar, and Kollankulam and enquired about the cause of water inundation in residential areas.
High-pressure motor pumps were employed to drain water from the inundated areas in Karumandapam and Piratiyur. The Minister asked the officials to expedite the work and interacted with the residents.
Many residential areas in the city remained waterlogged on the third day, causing inconvenience to the residents. The roads dug up for underground drainage (UGD) work had become muddy and inaccessible due to the recent heavy rain. Officials said all vulnerable areas would be identified and a comprehensive study conducted to prevent waterlogging in the city’s affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Tiruchi Corporation has planned to construct new storm-water drains on both sides of K.K. Nagar Main Road. A detailed project report would be prepared and the civic body would fund the project.
