In a major administrative reshuffle, Tushar Giri Nath, 1993 batch IAS officer, has been transferred out of his post of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner. He has been posted as the Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Urban Development Department. However, he will be administrator of the BBMP.
The transfer comes into immediate effect following the retirement of IAS officer Umashankar S.R., who is the BBMP administrator, on April 30, 2025.
Mr. Giri Nath will be overseeing the formation of the Greater Bengaluru Authority and boundaries for the corporations. Mr. Giri Nath has also been given concurrent charge of Additional Chief Secretary to Government, Home Department.
The government has posted Maheshwar Rao M., a 1995 batch IAS officer, as BBMP Chief Commissioner. Mr. Rao has been given concurrent charge of the BBMP along with his current posting as Managing Director of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).
The government notification further clarified that the posts of Administrator, BBMP, and Chief Commissioner, BBMP, are considered equivalent in status and responsibilities to the cadre post of Additional Chief Secretary to Government under Rule 12 of the IAS (Pay) Rules, 2016.
Mr. Giri Nath, in his tenure as the Chief Commissioner of the BBMP since 2022, saw both highs and lows. He handled one of the worst floods Bengaluru saw in 2023. His measures to manage floods reduced inundation of homes in the city during the rains in the succeeding years. He has also worked towards cracking down on illegal flexes and banners, although flexes continue to dot the city.
On the other hand, the poor state of roads in the city continued to haunt his tenure as well.
