On September 20, the Film Federation of India announced the Gujarati film, Chhello Show, as India's official entry to the Oscars 2023. However, SS Rajamouli's RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, still has a chance to make it to the Academy Awards.
SS Rajamouli's magnum-opus RRR, starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan, impressed the West and won a lot of love from Hollywood. However, the film was snubbed by the Film Federation of India as they chose the Gujarati film, Chhello Show, as India's official entry to Oscars 2023. However, RRR still has a chance to make it to the Academy Awards by competing in multiple categories.
After Pan Nalin's Chhello Show got selected as India's entry for Oscars 2023, furious fans of RRR took over Twitter to express their displeasure. Many pointed out that RRR could have been chosen as it has already earned a name for itself in the West.
RRR's US distributor, Dylan Marchetti, told Variety that he will launch a full campaign for the film. He will be calling on the 10,000 members of the Academy to vote for RRR in all categories.
According to Dylan, SS Rajamouli's RRR will be submitted in the following categories:
In addition to these categories, RRR will also be submitted for best production design, film editing, costume design, makeup and hairstyling, sound and visual effects.
RRR is still yet to make it to the Academy Streaming Room. If a film has been selected to feature in the Academy Streaming Room, it means it could lure in voters to see it on the big screen. Last year, Suriya's Soorarai Pottru was selected to be featured in the Academy Streaming Room.
Speaking to Variety, Dylan Marchetti of Variance Films said that RRR has brought joy to global audiences for the past six months. He said, "We have seen the film gross over $140 million worldwide to become one of India’s highest grossing films of all time and become the first film in history to trend globally on Netflix for over 14 weeks. We have seen the film fill up theaters with cheering audiences months after its initial release, including the historic TCL Chinese IMAX theater in Hollywood, where it will play next Friday to an audience that sold out of one of the largest theaters in the country in just 15 minutes."
