Indians dancing amid layoffs: Americans use Amazon India party clip to spew hate
India Today
A video of staffers dancing in an Amazon India office has been used by the MAGA crowd in the US to attack the offshoring of jobs by American companies. Several users on X complained that while Americans were being laid off in the US by Amazon, their colleagues in India were celebrating.
A seemingly innocent clip of employees participating in what appears to be an office party or celebration within the premises of an Amazon India office has invited vitriolic backlash from people on social media who argued that Americans were being laid off and their jobs were being offshored to India.
The video of the office workers celebrating was reposted by one user on X with the caption, "Amazon is laying off thousands of hardworking, skilled US workers and offshoring, citing 'top global talent'. It's a different story across the ocean. No innovation and office dance parties with zero productivity. Amazon is in decline due to Indian replacement of American talent." For context, Amazon had announced in January that the company would be cutting at least 16,000 jobs across the world. Its Chief People Officer, Beth Galetti, said the move was to "strengthen our organisation by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy".
This was on top of the roughly 14,000 roles it had already eliminated by the end of 2025. But while the layoffs were felt by Amazon's workforce across the world, the majority of job losses took place in the US.
Compounding this, on February 2, Amazon announced that it was laying off 2,198 employees across the state of Washington as part of the company’s latest corporate workforce reduction, according to a new filing by the state's Employment Security Department.
The Amazon India video was used by those in the US to highlight the alleged discrimination. The commentators, seemingly from the MAGA crowd, reposted the video, claiming Indian employees were dancing while their American counterparts were receiving layoff emails. They incited considerable backlash and controversy among social media users.
