An Indian woman in Canada wore a traditional Marathi Nauvari saree for her citizenship oath ceremony, which earned her praise for celebrating her cultural roots.
An Indian woman living in Canada chose to wear a traditional Marathi nauvari saree for her Canadian citizenship oath ceremony, celebrating her roots as she shared the video of the experience on social media.
The video was shared on Instagram by Divya Lotlikar with the caption: "Proud to be where I am without forgetting where I’m from. Keeping my roots alive."
The clip begins with Divya debating what to wear for the ceremony, seen considering a formal dress or a suit, which were typical choices for such official events.
The reel then transitions to her confidently stepping into the oath ceremony dressed in a traditional Marathi nauvari saree, paired with traditional jewellery and a neatly tied bun, standing out gracefully among the formal setting and national flags in the background.
A Nauvari saree, which is also known as lugade or kaashtha, is a traditional Maharashtrian garment that measures nine yards, unlike the standard six-yard saree. It is uniquely draped in a dhoti-style, with the fabric passed between the legs and tucked at the back, a style that allows ease of movement while symbolising strength, practicality, and cultural heritage.

Leon Panetta said Iran war was not an unexpected risk. He pointed out that for years, US security officials have known Iran could disrupt global oil supplies by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. According to him, this was a well-known danger, but one that appears to have been overlooked in the current conflict.
