Incessant rains in Kodagu, one person dies due to tree fall

Consequent to heavy rains in the catchment area of the river Cauvery in Kodagu, the rate of inflow into the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) reservoir surged on May 27. The inflow was at the rate of 19,129 cusecs at 8 a.m. compared to 2,053 cusecs on May 26. The reservoir level was 92 feet against the full level of 124.80 feet on May 27, compared to 89.35 feet on May 26.

As heavy rains lashed Kodagu on May 27, one person died after a tree collapsed on him in Banangala village in Virajpet taluk.

The deceased, P.C. Vishnu (65), suffered grievous injuries when a mango tree got uprooted due to gusty wind and fell on him at 7.30 a.m. He succumbed while being taken to a hospital.

This is the second such death in Kodagu ever since rains began pounding the district on May 22. Gowri (50) of Arji village – also in Virajpet taluk - had died under similar circumstances on May 24.

Kodagu district has received a cumulative rainfall of 76.82 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on May 27. Bhagamandala, the birth place of the river Cauvery, received 112 mm while Shanthalli in Somwarpet taluk has received 150 mm of rainfall during this period.

Other places with heavy rainfall include Srimangala (113 mm), Balale (62.02 mm) Ammathi (80 mm), Napoklu (102 mm) and Ponnampet, which has received 85 mm of rainfall.
